GUEST ACTRESS IN A COMEDY SERIES. Molly Shannon, “Enlightened,” HBO. Dot-Marie Jones, “Glee,” Fox. Melissa Leo, “Louie,” FX. Melissa McCarthy, “Saturday Night Live,” NBC. Kristen Wiig, “Saturday Night Live,” NBC. Elaine Stritch, “30 Rock,” NBC. Leo gave a fine if disconcerting performance as Louie’s crude set-up date in a memorable episode rife with sexual politics. It was equal parts drama and comedy, and she earned the award. For pure laughs and a less edgy performance, voters may pick Stritch.

The four principal actors are excellent; the direction, by Cornelia Burdick Thompson is very good with only a few peccadilloes; and the sets, by Patrick Klein, and costumes, by Mary Craven, are delightful. The problem is the play itself. “Blithe Spirit” was a tremendous hit when it opened, 70 years ago, in London. But it is not entirely universal, and it is certainly not timeless. While it does offer a number of very good laughs, the audience has changed, and indeed, comedy has changed, since 1941.
